Demo session for RDI experts and teachers of Energy Technology and Civil and Construction engineering

October 6, 2022

SMARCTIC project partner Lapland University of Applied Sciences (Finland) held a demo session for RDI experts and teachers of Energy Technology and Civil and Construction engineering with the participation of 20 stakeholders. They showcased their pilot to increase energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy solutions in the Finnish Lapland public buildings and they also shared their findings during the project and got some good feedback for their SEMM site.

Due to extreme weather conditions, energy consumption is extremely high for several months in the Finnish Lapland. SMARCTIC project partner pilots include an ice hockey hall and football hall, which are next to each other. Both buildings have high energy consumption and Ounashalli (football hall) has minor problems with heating as the indoor temperature drops a little too low sometimes. The aim is to improve energy efficiency in these large buildings that contains several spaces of high energy consumption.

For example, energy usage at the Ice Hockey arena (Lappi Areena) is difficult to manage because it has spaces that require heating and spaces that require cooling at the same time. Some of the heat generated in the cooling process is directed out of the building. So, through this pilot, Lapland University of Applied Sciences is trying to find new solutions to reuse that excess heat, either in the same building or in the building next to it.

SMARCTIC project partner Hannu Korhonen from Lapland University of Applied Sciences shared that “It was really nice to show what we have been working on for our fellow RDI experts and teachers. We got really good feedback for the content on our site and really good points on what we should still add there.

Based on the feedback, Lapland University of Applied Sciences have got really good data and information on their site, but they will add more background information and explanations of certain professional terminology, so the site is more understandable for the general public.
